Everyone loves weddings. But they love epic proposals even more.
Especially when everyone's favorite celeb is doing the "proposing." After all, their loaded wallets and high-profile reach allow them to create some of the best marriage proposals out there in the world.
It's a Hollywood fairytale thing!
From enchanting their lover with an elephant ride and a stroll through a royal garden to renting out an entire stadium and an orchestra, some celebs know how to bat it right out of the park when they propose to their significant others.
But not all celebs have the know-how to pull off something so epic. Not because they weren't trying. But because things went weirdly wrong along the way. Hey, even stars can't get every performance perfect.
Like, realizing while on their knees that they forgot to bring the ring. Or, when they had to chase down a few trucks just to get to their ring in time.
So here are 10 celeb marriage proposals that were truly epic, and 10 that were just meh.
Just watch out for the proposal that went NSFW! And the one that went full out Hollywood. Because sometimes real life can be truly stranger than fiction.
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello's wedding lasted an epic three days. But before that wedding came the proposal. Which, again, was totally epic!
Joe did it while the two of them were on vacation in Princeville, Kauai on Christmas Eve.
And it was completely in Spanish, Sofia's native language.
“I had a big speech in Spanish, and that’s what I was nervous about,” he said on Live! with Kelly and Michael. “The last thing you want to do is like mess up the Spanish on the proposal to the [Spanish-speaking] woman.”
We lost our marbles when the news broke that George Clooney was getting married to a lady named Amal Alamuddin. Say what?!
But the actual proposal was a bit lack-luster. Not that Clooney didn't try. He had planned it all out right down to a cozy candlelit dinner for two.
"I’ve got it all set up, timed out and the song is coming and she gets up to go wash the dishes, which she’s never done,” Clooney told Ellen on her show. So he improvised quickly, blew out the candles, and asked her to pass him the lighter that was in the "ring" box.
Unfortunately, on seeing the ring Amal didn't understand what was going on. Not until Clooney dropped down on one knee and said, "Look, I hope the answer is yes but I need an answer because I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon if I don’t get an answer."
When Russell Brand invited Katy Perry to vacation with him in India for the New Year's weekend in 2009, she had no idea there was a surprise waiting for her on New Year's Day.
It was all planned out. First, the two arrived in a horse-drawn carriage to the gardens of the Taj Rambagh Palace Hotel, where they enjoyed a romantic dinner-for-two surrounded by candles. Then they watched the fireworks on the back of an elephant.
And finally, they went strolling in the Mughal Gardens where Brand had asked his butler to hide the ring among the flowers.
So when Katy found it, he immediately dropped down on one knee and proposed. The ecstatic singer said yes immediately.
The two have now split and gone their separate ways.
To be honest, Will Smith had not planned to propose to Jada the day he did it. In fact, it was not even on his mind.
But when the two were tucked into bed that night, he looked over to her and said, "Hey, we might be real good married. Wassup? You wanna marry me?" To which, she said yes. And then they went sleep.
Yeah, that happened. But Will made up for the lackluster proposal by buying her a brilliant 12-carat emerald-cut diamond ring with two shoulder-set baguette diamonds on either side.
Kanye West had a special surprise planned for Kim on her 33rd birthday. It involved renting out the entire AT&T stadium in San Francisco, hiring a full-member orchestra, and arranging for a dazzling pyrotechnics display.
But what Kim didn't know was that the party was not just for her birthday.
So, of course, she was surprised when 'Ye walked her to the pitch and dropped down on one knee with the words “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!” flashing on the massive jumbotron behind her! The proposal came with a 15-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that was apparently worth $8 million.
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka's engagement story goes likes this:
The two of them were on their way to a casino for an event when David asked their limo driver to pull on over to the side of the road. NPH was not sure why. He thought David wanted to buy some liquor.
“And then he got on one knee and proposed, and I was so freaked out by it that I said, ‘Yes’," Harris told Out Magazine. David had pulled over the limo at the exact spot where the two had met for the first time.
"...I got the ring and loved it, and a year later, on Valentine’s Day, I proposed to him in Santa Monica.”
Ludacris proposed to his girlfriend Eudoxie Mbouguiengue on a plane. But it wasn't a simple champagne and roses event. Nope. The rapper doesn't believe in simple.
“I look at myself as a pretty romantic guy. I’m a creative guy... And these things stick with women for the rest of their lives so I had to go above and beyond,” the rapper said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
So he hired a private plane and took Eudoxie on a ride over Costa Rica.
And then asked her to look outside the window. When she did, this is what she saw:
"EUDOXIE WILL YOU MARRY ME <3" painted on the fields of grass below.
He later shared a collage of the moment on his IG page and captioned it with her response, an enthusiastic yes.
When Seth Rogen bought an engagement ring for Lauren Miller, he planned an intricate proposal to go with it. But those plans went down the drain once he got back home.
He told Conan O'Brien that the ring made him feel as if someone had left him with a truckload of illegal substances. And so he rushed into their bedroom where Lauren was changing at the moment, and popped the question while she was stuck halfway into her clothes.
"I had already kind of started it. I didn’t picture it like this, and I know she didn’t picture it like this,” said Rogen. “I figured the only appropriate thing was to place the ring on her [lady part], actually."
Maksim Chmerkovskiy and his girlfriend Peta Jane Murgatroyd became household names after their long stint as professional dancing partners for the stars on Dancing with the Stars. They both had the ability to bring the dancefloor to life whenever they swayed on it.
But when Peta joined Maksim and company for the show Sway: A Dance Trilogy in 2014, she had no idea Maksim would drop down on one knee after one year right after the completion of their popular show.
“I’m in love with you, and I will be in love with you for the rest of my life," he said as he asked her to marry him. Maksim said yes with the crowd cheering madly in the background.
Matthew McConaughey had planned an epic proposal for his longtime girlfriend, Camila Alves. He planned to do it on Christmas Day in front of his whole family.
So when Camila got to her present and started unwrapping it, she was surprised when the box revealed another box inside. And another inside that. And so on until she reached the second-last box and opened it to find a pretty ring box sitting inside.
When she snapped it open, Matthew immediately dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him. But didn't say yes. She said something totally unexpected.
But Matthew's response was perfect. "...Look, I’m down on a knee. I’ll stay here awhile. I will outlast you.’ And I did! She conceded," Matthew told Jay Leno about how Camila finally came around to saying yes.
Pink isn't one to follow convention. And so when she realized she wanted to spend the rest of her life with her motocross racer boyfriend, Carey Hart, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
During the Pro 250 Class Finals in Mammoth, CA, she wrote "Will you marry me?" on a whiteboard and waved it from the assistance area while Hart was racing past.
Without missing a beat, Hart completed the lap and then pulled over to give her a big kiss, sealing the deal.
The couple is still very much happily married.
To be honest, this one's on the 'Meh' list because there was nothing over-the-top about it. Unless you consider chasing down two FedEx trucks to track down an engagement ring over-the-top.
So here's what happened:
Jaime King and Kyle Newman knew they wanted to marry each other. So they went ring shopping and placed an order for it. They wanted to take it with them on their vacation where Kyle was planning to propose the right way.
Unfortunately, the delivery got delayed. But Jaime did not want to leave without the ring.
So she chased down a FedEx truck and asked the driver if he had her ring. He didn't. So she chased down another. And there it was. Phew!

“He helped me cut together a little movie of all the most romantic moments of the Disney and Pixar Animation. It was pretty special.”
Then he took Caitlin McHugh to Disneyland for a special screening of The Little Mermaid. And to her surprise, once the movie ended, Sebastian showed up on screen holding the sign "GO ON AND ASK THE GIRL!"
So he did like the perfect Prince Charming. And Caitlin, of course, said yes!
John Legend had planned a beautiful proposal for Chrissy Teigen during their vacation in the Maldives. But he had no idea it would get so Hollywood.
As in, first, the couple ended up having a huge fight on their way to the airport. Then, the TSA asked John to open his carry-on where he had secretly stashed the ring box. And finally, when they reached the location of the proposal, Chrissy said that she had bad stomach cramps and needed to go inside.
Wondering how John proposed at last? He did so by hiding the ring in Chrissy's salad. And now they are happily married with two cute kids.
Sam Esmail and Emmy Rossum had a cute Sunday routine. It involved reading the 'Modern Love' section of The New York Times.
"Then one weekend we didn’t read it — I don’t remember why exactly," Rossum told Vogue during an interview. "The following Friday he reminded me that we hadn’t. I was actually in kind of a bad mood that day, so I said, ‘Oh, well I’ll read it eventually.’ And he said, ‘No, no, no, I think you should read it.’"
The couple went back and forth and finally, Rossum agreed to read it aloud while soaking in the bathtub with a glass of wine.
"So I got in the bathtub with the ‘Modern Love’ section ... and the story is about a director who falls in love with an actress, and I started to think: Huh, that’s strange. And then I realized that it was our love story.”
Esmail proposed to her right then. And, as you know it, she said yes!
Peter Facinelli and Jaimie Alexander might have split now, but we've got to tell you what happened on the day they got engaged.
Facinelli had scheduled a plane to fly past the Empire State Building at 4 P.M. with a banner asking Alexander to marry him. But she was feeling cold and so went inside right before the scheduled hour.
He finally managed to convince her to come out again, but by then the sky had gathered a few too many clouds. And so they lost the plane.
Facinelli eventually managed to find the plane and propose. But it still turned out to be quite messy.

He took Ciara on a plane ride where he asked her to play a game of 'Travel Roulette' with 30 possible destinations to choose from.
It finally ended with them landing in Seychelles, where he took her to the private Honeymoon Beach and proposed.
It was a beautiful sunset proposal. And Ciara, of course, said yes!
Saturday Night Live's star Aidy Bryant had a hilarious story to tell when she was a guest on Seth Meyers' late night talk show. It was about how her longtime boyfriend, Conner O'Malley, had popped her the question. And it started with her returning back home from work one night to find her dog waiting for her in a bowtie.
"I was like, ‘My dog doesn’t wear a bowtie! Where is he going tonight?’" she told Seth.
"Basically, the second I shut the door ... Conner frantically came around the corner and was just like, ‘Will you marry me?!’ ... Just a man in full terror standing very far from a dog in a bowtie, just holding a loose ring going, ‘Will you marry me?’"
She thought he was pulling a practical joke on her. But once the confusion cleared up went on to say yes.
Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria had no idea her businessman boyfriend, José Antonio Bastón, was going to pop the question when they were in Dubai for some charity work.
But pop it, he did. And right in the middle of the desert surrounded by rosy sand dunes!
Bastón had arranged a special lounge for the two of them with patterned pillows and Persian rugs. And then asked her if she wanted to marry him.
The proposal was complete with a brilliant ruby engagement ring that Eva later shared on her IG page with the caption "So ummm, this happened..."
Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor may not be married anymore, but they spent 17 years of their life married to each other. And it all started with a botched up proposal.
Stiller had planned it down to the last detail, creating a trail of candles and rose petals from Taylor's front door to the backyard. And she followed it right out to find a smiling Ben on one knee.
The proposal was going smoothly... until Stiller realized that he had forgotten to keep the ring on his person. So he dashed inside and came out with it so Taylor could say yes.
